Shirley Young
Mitchell
Jan 28, 1934 — Sep 11, 2022
Fort Pierce
Shirley Young Mitchell, of Fort Pierce, FL, died peacefully on Sunday, September 11, in Fort Pierce after a long illness. Shirley was born on January 28, 1934 in Crumpler, WV, and she graduated from Northfork High School, class of 1951. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Tom, and children Cindy (Eric) of Mechanicsville, VA; Thomas (Eleonore) of Lacey, WA; and Jeff of Norfolk, VA. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, Heather (Birchell), Chris (Erin), Patrick (Aundréa), Phillip, and Joshua, and 8 great-grandchildren, Elijah, Bethany, Isaiah, Logan, Maryanne, Noah, Genevieve, and Jonah. Shirley is also survived by her sister, Mary Kaye Catron of Ft. Pierce, FL and her brother, Ralph "Joe" Young (Minnie) of San Antonio, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Jessie Young, and her sister Nancy Vorono (Tony).
Shirley was good with numbers, and she used this effectively for her professional life. She was creative, putting a lot of passion into cooking and painting, and she loved to read. She adored her family and friends, and this showed clearly. She never forgot a birthday or holiday; she loved to select and give gifts; she made every effort to participate in milestone celebrations, no matter how difficult the travel might be; and she just enjoyed staying in touch. She learned to use modern technology and she could often be found on her phone, on video chats, or just staying updated on Facebook. She especially got a kick out of trading "knock-knock jokes" with her great-grandchildren.
Shirley will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Shirley will be laid to rest with her heavenly Father on Friday, September 23 at 1:00 P.M. at Grandview Memory Mausoleum Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Reverend Walter (Buddy) Pierce, pastor of The Church of St. Peter & St. Paul (Anglican) Roanoke, VA, presiding.
There will be a reception immediately following the service at Fincastle Presbyterian Church and all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shirley's favorite charity, St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, SD (saintjosephs@stjo.org).
