Obituary

Shirley Smart Crabtree

(March 14, 1936 – August 20, 2026)

Shirley Smart Crabtree, 90, of Bluefield, VA went home to be with the Lord on August 20, 2026.  She was born March 14, 1936 to the late Joseph Henry and Ethel Gilmore Smart, Sr. in Pulaski County.

Shirley worked for the Bluefield Supply Company for over 25 years and afterwards for the Noland Company.

She loved her family and spending time together traveling and sightseeing.   She especially enjoyed trips with her family to Dollywood and the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, and the many tourist bus trips with her late husband to visit over 40 states and tourist attractions.  She was always there to support and care for her family and friends.  She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, VA where she was involved in many activities through the years.  She especially enjoyed the special music, events, and gospel groups that came to share their ministry through music with our church family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pierce Crabtree, three brothers, Robert Smart, Elwood Smart, Joe Smart Jr., seven sisters, Lucille Wilson, Frances Slater, Dorothy McCoy, Dorleen Roop, Maleita Boyd, June Dobbins and Dolly Hedge.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Cynthia (Cindy) Crabtree; sister-in-law, Sue Hollyfield of Bluefield, VA; brother-in-law, Curtis Vest of Bluefield, VA; brother-in-law, Charles Crabtree and wife Teresa of Laurens, SC; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 24, 2026 at the Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, VA at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Bill Lykins officiating.  Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA.  Family and friends will service as pallbearers.  Friends may visit with the family prior to the service from 12:00 – 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to:  Memorial Baptist Church, 401 Virginia Avenue, Bluefield, VA 24605.

A special "Thank You" to all of the MSA Hospice nurses, assistants and staff for the care, compassion and support they gave to us throughout Mom's illness.  I appreciate everything all of you did for us.
