Obituary

Sandra Gail Thompson Carroll , 71, of Bluefield, VA, passed away at Westwood Center Nursing Home, Sunday, June 30, 2024.


Born in Mercer County, Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late Cardale and Betty Pauline Hardy Thompson. She loved her family and friends. Especially her best friends, her sister Donna and brother-in-law Richard.  She was an avid reader and loved to travel.  Spending time with her daughters and grandchildren was what she lived for.

She graduated from Bluefield High School and from The School of Bank Administration,  at the University of Wisconsin. After a successful career in banking at First Community Bank, she finished her working career at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, where she was the publisher's assistant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Dennis Thompson, Roger Thompson, Michael Thompson, Arlene Thompson Plaster,  all of Bluefield, WV; her daughter: Susan Carroll Sawyers, Bluefield, WV and her beloved husband Frank Henderson Carroll of Bluefield, VA.

She will be lovingly missed by her daughters: Vickie L. Gray (Jeff) of Okeechobee, FL and Betty Carroll of North Tazewell, VA; son-in-law: Butch Sawyers of Bluefield, WV; brother: Kenneth Thompson (Jerri) of Bluefield, VA , sister: Donna Meredith (Max) and sister-in-law Joyce Shrader Thomason all of Bluefield, VA. Her grandchildren: Amanda L. Pierce (Andre' Dublin), Martin A. Pierce, Kimberly D. Bennett (Bobby), Wesley A. Johnson (MaKena): great-grandchildren: Skylar M. Bennett, Birdie Dublin-Pierce, Berkley A. Johnson, Kallie J. Johnson and Lawson T. Bennett. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Sandra's life will be held on Friday, July 5, 2024 at noon in the Dudley Memorial Chapel.  Reverend Tony Reed will be officiating.

Friends may visit with the family at Dudley Memorial on Friday, July 5th, at 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service at noon.

Bobby Bennett, Wesley Johnson, Martin Pierce, Kevin Thompson, Tyler Thompson and Jerry Meredith will serve as pallbearers.


Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Grandview Mausoleum on Friday immediately following funeral service. Dinner will follow at Mud Fork Church of Christ.
