Obituary for Ruby Leala Durham Carter

Ruby Leala Durham Carter, 99, of Bluefield, VA, went to be with the Lord on October 19, 2016 surrounded by family. She was in Charleston General Hospital.
Ruby was born on April 7, 1917 on the Bluestone River, Bluefield, VA on route 460 to John Everett and Virginia "Jennie" Belle Tiller Durham. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of 67 years James Randolph Carter, her granddaughter Teresa Carter Vest and her eleven siblings, Gladys, Hazel, Everett Edward, Earnest "Coogie" Guy Durham, Thelma "Sim" Lorraine Eldridge, Marvin "Jack" Eugene Durham, Letha Mae Englehart, James Calvin, Sr., Ray Lincoln, Frank Kenneth, and Ida Mae Durham and her son-in-law Jack DeRochi. She was the last member of her generation.
Ruby was the most loving and caring person, a devoted mother to her six children: James Randolph Carter Jr. (Mattie) (caregivers), Gary Lee Carter (Barbara), Donna Sue Satterfield (Tommy), Janet Lanier Ford (Louis), Ina Whitley-DeRochi (Jack), and Brenda Kay McLemore (Vernon). She had 21 grandchildren and spouses, 40 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews including special nieces, Carolyn Eldridge Harless and husband Ronnie, Jan Kincaid and Joan Elliott, as well as her sisters-in-law Georgia Neel Durham and Nancy Price Carter. Ruby always had such a wonderful, positive attitude about life and her devotion to her Lord was shown throughout her daily life. She was a true blessing to all those who knew and loved her. She will truly be missed.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 2:00pm at Dudley Memorial Chapel with Rev. Steve Aker officiating. Graveside service will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens with grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers. There will be a time of visitation for family and friends from 6-8pm on Friday evening October 21st at Dudley Memorial Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Bailey United Methodist Church, 1420 Bailey Switch Road, Bluefield, VA 24605. She was the oldest member of this church.
