ROGER LEE AKERS
Roger Lee Akers, 74 of Bluefield, WV, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Mercer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he had resided for the past 10 years. Roger was born in Bluefield on May 27, 1941 and resided in Bluefield his entire life. He graduated from Beaver High School and went on to work for the Bluefield Daily Telegraph for 44 years until his retirement. He may be remembered by many in the community for his love of baseball, particularly the local Bluefield Orioles, who he supported by attending games and volunteering in the concession stand for a number of years.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Laman Virginia Martin Akers, his sister, Kitty Breen and his brother, Jerry Akers. He is survived by his nieces, Sharon Breen of Woodbridge, VA, Tara Fletcher and family (spouse: Mark, children: Sarah, Abby, David and Taylor) of Chesapeake, VA and Robin Street and family (spouse: Richard, children: Benjamin and Jessica) of North Tazewell, VA and a nephew Gene Breen of Woodbridge, VA, special caregivers and staff of Mercer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at Dudley Memorial Chapel with Pastor Doug McDaniel officiating. Interment will take place at Grandview Memory Gardens. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Saturday at the funeral home from 7:00 p.m. until the hour of service. The family requests no flowers be sent but instead make a donation to the charity of your choice in his honor.
