Obituary

Mildred Lucille Muncy Hartsock

On September 29, 2025, Mildred Lucille Muncy Hartsock, at the age of 96, entered eternal life, which had been the motivating factor of her entire life.  Millie, as she was known to her friends and family, was born on September 4, 1929, to Squire Washington Muncy and Gladys Gertrude Lockhart Muncy in Iaeger, West Virginia and spent her childhood in the coalfields of West Virginia.  She graduated as the senior class valedictorian from Graham High School and started her career as an executive secretary for Seyler Lumber company.

In 1951 she married Lewis Conley Hartsock with whom she enjoyed 56 years of married life.  In 1957 they welcomed their daughter, Robbi Lynn Hartsock and Millie became a full-time homemaker and mother for 20 years, the most important and joyful career in her life and one at which she excelled.  Among her many accomplishments she was known as a champion spot remover, perfected the art of ironing and was a home room mother at Robbi's school from first grade through senior year.  She always looked perfectly dressed, ready for any occasion and was especially adamant that her hair was permed, curled and styled no matter what.  After Robbi entered college Millie joined her husband at Nationwide Insurance helping run the business and became a real estate agent to assist him in his broker real estate sales.

The other extremely important part of her life was her religion.  She taught Sunday School from the time she was in high school well into her 80's and her lifetime membership at the First United Methodist Church in Bluefield Virginia was a defining element of her life.  Her membership there was an extremely active one, including being a Sunday School teacher, helping with the youth program and serving on numerous committees.  Millie was a lifelong learner.  Her curiosity enveloped a wide array of diverse topics.  She traveled to 47 of the 50 states with her family on many memorable trips, not just driving through to get a place checked off but spending time in each state to really experience them.  She loved cats, describing herself as a cat person.  Also, she loved a good hamburger with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.  She was especially proud of her time being a volunteer in the ICU at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.  Her continued involvement in her daughter Robbi's life was one of her greatest joys, frequently traveling to Baltimore and around the country with her.

Millie will be remembered for the many things she did throughout her life but will be remembered most as a person who genuinely loved people.  She was a great friend to so many people in this community, always ready to listen, trusted to keep any confidence and a champion to the underdog to the very end.  Millie was predeceased in death by her husband, parents, one brother, Kenneth Eugene Muncy and one sister, Claris Marie Sturges.

She is survived by her daughter, Robbi Lynn Hartsock, sister-in-law Patricia Muncy and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  Funeral arrangements are being handled by Dudley Memorial Mortuary.

The service will be at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 4.  The family will be available to greet friends at 1 pm with funeral services following at 2 pm. Pallbearers include her nephews: Randy Phillips, Keith Reed, Lawrence Reed, and Ron Sturges, and friends: Randall Hash, Eric Smothers, Rodger Woodrum and Mike Ziegler.  The family will observe a private burial service later.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 200 South College Avenue, Bluefield, Virginia, 24605.
