MICK GREGORY

Michael Anthony Gregory, affectionately and most simply known as Mick to all who were lucky enough to love him, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 9th, 2022.

Mick was born June 22nd, 1952 in Abingdon, Virginia to the late Horace J. and Jaqueline Gregory.  He graduated from Graham High School in 1972.

Mick proudly served his country, enlisting as a member of the United States Air Force in 1972 and attended basic training at Fort Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. After basic training he served as an Air Craft Maintenance Specialist and was stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan; The United States Taiwan Defense Command in Taiwan the Republic of China and Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas where in 1976 he was honorably discharged with the rank of (E4) Sergeant.

Also in 1972 Mick would marry the love of his life, Loretta Sue Compton. This marriage would go on to last a loving 50 years 128 days and would produce a loving son, Michael Eugene Gregory in 1976 followed by a beautiful daughter, Deana Michelle Gregory in 1978 along with five future grandchildren.

Mick was a proud, hard working and dedicated employee of Norfolk Southern Railroad for 38 years, working as a signal maintainer and eventually retiring as a signal supervisor over the Pocahontas Division in 2014.

Mick was preceded in death by both parents, Horace J. and Jaqueline Gregory; father and mother in law, G. E. and Arlene Compton.

Mick is survived by his loving wife, Loretta; his son Michael Gregory and permanent friend Amanda Viers; daughter Michelle McCarty and husband Seth; Jaclyn Gregory; Grandchildren Samantha McCarty, Landon McCarty, Mykah Gregory, Kaedan Gregory and Piper Gregory; sisters Gloria Conley, Cathy Etter and husband James; Lisa Rose; and brothers in law Kerry and TyAnn Compton; Larry Compton and wife Tammy; and sister in law Ernestine Dalton and husband Larry.

Mick was a devoted husband, a dedicated father and a doting Paw Paw. He welcomed everyone into his heart and home with open arms.  If you knew Mick, you loved Mick and if Mick knew you, you knew he loved you back, and that's what made him great.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 13th, 2022 between 5 - 7 pm at the East River Church in Bluefield, Virginia.  Dudley Memorial Mortuary will be serving the family.
