Obituary

Meda Joyce Dye Holbrook

Meda was a living example of a faithful Christian woman, a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was always thinking of and caring for others beyond herself. She went home to her Savior on Friday, September 1, 2023.

Meda was born on July 31, 1937, to George Franklin Dye and Nannie Kate Crabtree Dye in Tazewell, VA. After graduating from Tazewell High School in 1955, Meda went on to attend McClain Business College in Bluefield, WV. Meda worked as a secretary for many years, ending her career at Princeton First Church of God in Princeton, WV.

Meda met the love of her life, Lloyd, while working as a waitress around her class schedule. He was immediately infatuated and after hearing she needed rides to and from Bluefield for school, became dedicated to win her affection. They were married on October 24, 1956, and raised four children, Judy, David, Martin and Susan.

Since Meda was very young when her mother died, she was raised by her grandmother. In 1983, she wrote about her early years. "I grew up in my grandmother's home and she was a real saint of God. She lived her salvation. Faith was something she lived by, and we were taught to live that way." That faith became Meda's inheritance. She said she wanted her children to remember her, not for things she could buy them or leave them here, but for the Christian life she lived before them. She knew that God had a heaven full of riches for His children, and now her faith has become sight.

Meda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lloyd C. Holbrook; her son, Martin D. Holbrook; her parents, George and Nannie Kate Dye; her brothers, George and Douglas Dye; and sister Betty Kerr. She is survived by her children; Judy C. (Marlin) Howell of Bluefield, VA, L. David (Mary) Holbrook of Bluefield, VA, Susan D. (Scott) Hodge of Camden, SC, and daughter-in-law Dee Deskins Holbrook of Richmond, VA, her six grandchildren; Michael D. (Tamara) Holbrook of Bluefield, VA, Jennifer B. (Craig) Barton of Bluefield, VA, Shawn R. (Elizabeth) Howell of Abingdon, VA, Kimberly D. (David) DePena of Richburg, SC, Isaac S. Hodge of Camden, SC, and Zoe G. Hodge of Camden, SC, and her four great grandchildren; Tristen Holbrook, Lucy Barton, Henry Barton, all of Bluefield, and Adley Howell of Abingdon, VA.
