BLUEFIELD, Va. — Mary Langhorne Hurley, 87, died on March 19, 2019 at her daughter's home in Wilmington, DE surrounded by family.
Born September 23, 1931 in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of the late William Dabney Langhorne and Florence Mitchell Langhorne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jack S. Hurley, her sister, Myrtle Langhorne Wilson, and nephew, Charles H. Wilson III.
Survivors include her five children, Beverly Hurley Friedberg (Bob), Rebecca Hurley Mercke (Roger), Jack Switzer Hurley, Jr. (Julie), John Langhorne Hurley, and Mary Dabney "Dee" Hurley Shoemaker (Chris); her fifteen grandchildren, Brett (Katherine), Michelle, and Lauren Friedberg, Jim (Shea), Jay (Caitlin), Bill (Taylor) Mercke and Beth Mercke Bailey (Michael), Hannah and Chandler (Jessie) Hurley, Heather, Luke and Lucy Hurley, and Nick, Sam and Abby Shoemaker; and great-grandchildren, Anna, Claire, Violet, James, McKenna, William, Kennedy, Frankie, Soren, and Jax. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Dabney (Vicky) Wilson, Cindy (Mark) Shoemaker, and Susan (Jim) Clark. The family is so thankful for her special caregivers Joyce Troutman, Sheila Privett, Azalia Schultheis, Nora Burke, Margaret Elam, Dr. Diaz-Stanchi and Dr. Phil Peterson.
Mary D. graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA 1949 and attended Longwood College. After her marriage to Jack in 1957, she committed her life to raising her five children and caring for her parents and grandchildren. She was past-President of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society for many years, and active in the PTA, Garden Club , and the Bridge Club for decades. She loved cooking, playing Bridge, winning Scrabble, and "Say Yes to the Dress."
In honoring Mary D.'s wishes, she will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at First Christian Church, Bluefield, WV with visitation one hour before the service. The family suggests donations be made to First Christian Church, 2200 Bland Road, Bluefield, WV or your favorite charity.
