June Victoria
Brown
Jun 29, 1934 — Jul 12, 2025
Bluefield
June Brown peacefully left her earthly home on July 12, 2025.
June Victoria Horn Brown was born on June 29, 1934 to Maggi and Luther Horn. She was born in the house built by her father, and she was delivered by her maternal grandmother and great grandmother who were both midwives.
Her siblings included Huey (Dottie), Jewel (George, Roger), Roger (June), Violet (Corkey, Roger), Randall (Debbie), and Steve (Judy). She was the last living member of her immediate family.
She married James Roy (Jim) on Valentine's Day in 1952 at Clark Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roseanne, VA and gained another family: Clarence and Ollie May Brown (Jim's parents), Bill and Sue Brown, Danny and Louise Brown, Margaret and J.B. Wallace, Jerry and Phyllis Brown, Bonnie and Tommy Justice, Mary Alice (Harold), Jack and Bernice Brown, Clarence and Betty Brown (siblings) and numerous nieces and nephews. June loved organizing beach trips for the family to Leckie Cottage in Wrightsville Beach and anywhere else she could get them to go. June loved to travel.
June and Jim organized many get-togethers at their place at Claytor Lake where there were always games, fishing and Jim crazily driving the boat so, people could learn to ski. Their place was for family because neither of them could swim but they loved feeding and laughing with their family.
She is survived by her children, Vicki Spurgeon (Eddie), Jim, and Mike (Michelle), 7 grandchildren: Leanne Woodson (Rob), Jes Spurgeon (Kerri), Matthew Brown (Therese), Staci Brown, Michael Brown II (Jessica), Alex Brown (Shelby), and Maggie Ball (Josh),11 great grandchildren: Annalee, Cody, Jesse, and Caitlyn Woodson, Cydney Spurgeon, Brody Dawson, Michael III and Ruston Brown, Aleister Ball, and Addilay Brown. She was so proud of them and loved attending their athletic and academic events. She always watched her family from afar on her SkyLight and could often be heard saying, "Send me pictures!"
She was loved by numerous nieces and nephews who considered her the true family matriarch and keeper of the family history. She was an avid genealogist and put together extensive family trees for both sides of her family. She could give you information about generations of family from memory, remembering dates, names and place. She could find a way to be "kin" to anyone.
June graduated from Ieager High School before she was 16 and though she may have been the youngest in her class she later helped organize many of their class reunions. Soon after graduation she left home to work at the old Grundy Hospital doing nursing work until they discovered what a good bookkeeper she was. She left to do payroll for Leckie Mines where she met her husband, Jim. She did payroll or worked as an office manager at locally owned business until she started to work for Tazewell County Schools. There she worked in the cafeteria at the old junior high for a while. She worked as secretary at Graham High School from 1976 until 1996. She loved every person there and took care of the students and faculty like she was their grandmother.
She chaperoned many field trips, going to New York with the Model UN, and she never missed a band trip even accompanying them to Disney World in Florida. She and her sister, Violet, traveled to Europe, chaperoning college students. After retiring from Tazewell County Schools, she and her husband traveled with family members to historic sites across the country soaking up family history to include in her genealogy records.
Later she worked with Tazewell County Tourism. She enjoyed being a part of the preservation of the Sander's House and set up a tourism center in Rosie's Cottage on site. She became an expert on the history of the house and shared that information from memory. She may have been born in McDowell County, but she knew more about Tazewell County than most people. She travelled to Richmond to lobby for funds and recognition for the county. She led bus tours to interesting places around the county, always drawing everyone's attention to the chicory that gave Bluefield its name. She did a weekly Facebook Live video about people and places that she had come to love in Tazewell County. Mrs. B's Buzz was viewed worldwide, and Mrs. B's Bee was pictured in places like Paris and Egypt. The new tourism center built in the Town of Bluefield, VA is named The June H Brown Visitor Center in honor of her work for the county. She worked there until she was 85.
June was involved in community service in so many ways. She helped start a hot lunch program at Roseanne school in Buchanan County, cooking food at home and carrying it to the school. She was a 'Gray Lady" at Wade School in Mercer County. June was a charter member of Fincastle Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, VA where she is an elder. She organized Bible Schools, acted as circle leader and helped to find pastors to serve at the church. She was a member of the Bluefield VA Woman's Club during the time the library was established in town hall. Reading was one of her greatest pleasures and she became one of the town libraries' most prolific patrons. She was a PTA president at Dudley and Graham Intermediate and an active band booster at Graham High School.
June spent time researching and recording information about local cemeteries. She was proud to share the information she found about the people buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, VA. Her information helped in the removal of the fence separating the black and white section of the cemetery. She attended the installation of the sign in West Graham identifying the Maple Hill African American Cemetery.
June spent the last several months of her life at Dogwood Crossing in Tazewell, VA. She enjoyed outings to local places, working puzzles or planting flowers with the beloved new friends she met there. She was voted Valentine princess by the residents and won Bible Jeopardy regularly. She loved the staff there and they treated her as their grandmother. They offered such comfort to June's family, knowing she was well cared for when they couldn't be there. She was also loved and cared for by MSA Home Health and Hospice staff who loved her on the way back to her family and her heavenly home.
The funeral will be held at Fincastle Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, officiated by her niece, Rev. Luana Cook Scott. Family visitation will be from 11 to 11:30. Family will receive friends 1 hour before the 1:00 service. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Dudley Memorial Mortuary has gracefully assisted the family.
In lieu of flowers June would have appreciated support for the Tazewell County Library or Fincastle Presbyterian Church.
