Obituary

Joyce Gregory Buchanan, 91, formerly of Bluefield, VA passed peacefully, Friday July 8, 2022 at Princeton Healthcare Center.  She was born in Bluefield, WV on August 18, 1930 to the late Aubrey Barnes Gregory and Moody Saphire Gregory.

Joyce was a graduate of Beaver High School, Bluefield College and obtained her B.S in Education from Concord College.  She taught her entire career at Tazewell High School teaching biology, chemistry and other life sciences.  Upon retirement from teaching she became very active in the Tazewell Soil and Water Conservation District holding the positions of District Director, Associate Director and currently Director Emeritus.  She was a dedicated teacher, volunteer and conservationist. She was instrumental in the Bluefield Virginia recycling program and received numerous awards for conservation and education programs implemented in Tazewell County.   She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Alpha Sigma Tau.  She was a very active member of Virginia Avenue Methodist Church and enjoyed decorating for Sunday worship and other events at the church.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by an infant brother Bobby Gregory and sister Phyllis Gregory Compton.  She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Glenn W. Buchanan; brother, James T. Gregory of Roanoke, VA; children, Keith Buchanan and wife Yvette of Bluefield, VA, Barbara Buchanan and Mike Onifer of Bluefield, VA; grandchildren, David Buchanan and wife Catherine of Carrollton, GA, Dr. Suzanne Earehart and husband Nick of Greenville, SC; great-grandchildren, Madison Buchanan, Claire Buchanan, Graham Buchanan, Charlotte Buchanan, Beckett Earehart and Baylor Earehart.  Two step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tazewell Soil and Water Conservation District, Attn: Education Foundation, 202 Campbell Lane, Tazewell, VA  24651; Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, 1901 Virginia Avenue, Bluefield, VA  24605; or the charity of your choice.

The family would like to send a very special thank you to the staff and caregivers at the Havens of Princeton and Princeton Health Care Center.

A private family memorial service to celebrate the life of Joyce will be held.  Pallbearers will be family and friends.
