JAMES KENNETH SURBER, SR.
James (Ken) Kenneth Surber, Sr. of Castlewood, Virginia passed away peacefully at his lake house in Boydton, Virginia on May 1, 2023 at the age of 90. He was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on November 1, 1932. He was the eldest child of the late James Albert Surber and Nell Porter Peery Surber. He leaves behind his Daughter-in-Law, Julia Surber; Grandson, Adam Surber; Granddaughter Rebecca Surber (Eric); Great Grandson Pierce Richardson and Great Granddaughter, Aftyn Richardson; his sister Carol Ann Stillwell (Curtis); numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many friends who he loved like family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patty Love Surber (2000), his only child, James (Kenny) Kenneth Surber, Jr. (2015), his brothers, Robert (Bob) Allen Surber (2010) and William (Bill) George Surber (2020).
He was a member of Ft. Gibson United Methodist Church, Castlewood, Virginia. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955. He retired from Clinchfield Coal Company in Dante, Virginia.
Ken was an avid golfer, hunter and angler, spending most of his time over the last 4 years fishing with friends and family at Bugs Island Lake in Boydton, Virginia. His Golden Years were truly golden and he lived life with determination and positivity even as he faced the untimely loss of his wife and, then, his son. His faith was strong and he looked forward to the time that they would all be reunited in heaven.
He will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity, generosity and kindness.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 6th at 1:00 pm in the mausoleum at Grandview Memory Gardens, 38659 Gov G C Peery Hwy, Bluefield, Virginia. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105
