Obituary

Irene H. Harman\ July 11, 1940 – January 30, 2026

Irene H. Harman passed away peacefully on January 30th in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on July 11, 1940, to Arietta Burnett and James Cruise, she lived a life marked by steadfast faith, devotion to family, and an enduring commitment to those she loved.

Irene was first married to Raleigh Neel, with whom she shared twenty-five cherished years raising their children in a warm and nurturing home. Following Raleigh's passing, she later married Darrow Harman, whom she was devoted to until his death. Family was the foundation of Irene's life, and she took immense pride in each generation.

She is preceded in death by her siblings: Ernest Hawks, Faye Doyle, Pansy Stevens, Otis Hawks, William Hawks, and Burnell Rourke. She is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Don) Nuss of Cincinnati, Ohio, and her son, Eddie (Susan) Neel of Charlotte, North Carolina as well as many nieces and nephews. Irene spoke often and with great joy of her children and the accomplishments they achieved throughout their lives.

Irene's greatest joy was found in her role as grandmother to Tyler Nuss of Cincinnati, Ohio; Ryan (Anna) Nuss of Bentonville, Arkansas; Michael Neel of Dayton, Ohio; and Paul Neel of New York, New York; and as great-grandmother to Margot Elisabeth Nuss, born January 22, 2026. She followed her grandchildren's activities with enthusiasm and unwavering support, attending or closely following every game, meet, and match. Her pride in them was immeasurable.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, Irene was a dedicated member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Virginia. She participated actively in church life and was especially committed to the Ladies Circle, particularly the Sarah Creasy Circle. She took great pleasure in contributing to longstanding church traditions, including the making of the beloved "Sarah's Sassy Salsa," and offered her assistance generously whenever members of the community were in need.

Irene will be remembered for her gracious spirit, steadfast faith, and abiding love for her family. Her legacy of kindness, encouragement, and quiet strength will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

The family will receive friends at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA on Wednesday, February 11th from 11:00 am until the time of the service at 12:30 pm which will be held in the Chapel and officiated by Mark Asbury and Larry Ramey.
