Gary Orren Sawyers, known affectionately as Pete, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024, at the age of 73, in Bluefield, West Virginia. Born on September 17, 1950, in the city of Tazewell, Virginia. Pete lived a life marked by dedication to his family and his work.
Pete's career was predominantly spent working for Norfolk Southern Railroad, a job he deeply cherished until he had to retire for medical reasons. Known for his strong work ethic, Pete was also a devoted father, a role he considered his most important.
Pete was a man of simple pleasures and deep faith. He relished the moments spent outdoors, watching the world go by, and cherished the quiet companionship of family and friends. His presence was a comforting one, where words could be few but the shared silence spoke volumes.
He is survived by his daughter, Rachel Sawyers, & son-in-law, Nathan Hancock. Pete also leaves behind his brother, James 'Butch' Sawyers, sister, Eva Mae 'Rita' Frost (husband Ernest), nephew, James Martin, best friend, Eddie Cline, & special aunt Debbie "Sis" Beverly (husband Bill), along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rachel Mary Ann Stevenson Sawyers & Harvey Lee 'Cotton' Sawyers, a sister, Patty Sue Sawyers, and many other beloved family members.
Pete's life was a testament to the values of family and faith, leaving a legacy of love and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew him.
In keeping with his wishes, Pete will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at Glenwood Park in the coming weeks. The date and time will be announced once arrangements are finalized. In lieu of flowers, please send pictures & memories of Pete to be shared at his memorial service to rachel04@vt.edu.
