Obituary

Fred William White, Jr.
June 13, 1949 – July 28, 2026

Fred William White, Jr., formerly of Black Mountain, NC, and most recently of Bluefield, VA (not Bluefield, WV, as he was always quick to point out), passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, at the age of 77.

Born on June 13, 1949, Fred lived a life defined by faith, patriotism, loyalty, and a deep love for family, friends, and animals. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred William White, Sr. and Helen Burnett White, as well as his beloved English Bulldog, Bob. Anyone who knew Fred understood that Bob held a special place in his heart.

Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Lorie Lilleberg White of Bluefield VA; his son, Fredrick Mitchell White (Pam Maxwell) Richlands, NC; his stepchildren, Dorinda Decker, Florence AZ; and Jeremiah Decker, (Teresa, and their children, Ashli and Kloe) Madera CA; and his sister, Sandra White Clark, Blk Mtn NC. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, fellow Marines, and neighbors who were touched by his friendship, wisdom, and generosity.

A proud Retired US Marine, Fred dedicated much of his life to serving his country. The Marine Corps was more than a career. It was a calling, a brotherhood, and a source of immense pride throughout his life. Even in retirement, he carried himself with the discipline, honor, and unwavering commitment that defined the Corps. After his military service, Fred continued his dedication to public service through his work with AKAL Security, where he remained employed until 2005.
And Grandview Memory Gardens until 5 years ago, where he retired to stay home and relax with his beloved wife and dogs.

Fred's guiding principles were simple and steadfast: God, Country, Family, Friends, and Animals. He lived these values every day, offering a helping hand when needed, a steady voice of encouragement, and a loyal friendship that could always be counted upon.

Perhaps Fred will be remembered most for his gift as a storyteller. Whether recounting a Marine Corps adventure, sharing a lesson learned, or spinning a tale that became richer with each retelling, he had a unique ability to captivate an audience. Fred could tell a story that left everyone laughing, wondering what was fact and what was embellishment, and eagerly waiting for the next chapter. He understood that stories are how memories endure, and through those stories, his spirit will live on.

Though his voice has fallen silent, the laughter, lessons, values, and love he shared will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him.

Honoring Fred's wishes there will be a celebration of his  life in Black Mountain NC with his friends and family at a later date to be announced on Facebook.
