ELEANOR RUTH NEAL SMITH

Eleanor Ruth Neal Smith, 95 of Wesley Street, Bluefield, VA, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2019 at Commonwealth Senior Living, Radford, VA. Born on September 03, 1924 in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Henderson and Linnie Leola May Neal. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband: Henry A. Smith; daughter: Wendy Gentry; 7 sisters and 3 brothers.

She is survived by sons: Edward of Bluefield, VA, Daniel and wife, Lecia of Blacksburg, VA and their children, Tye, Bethany and Chris; daughter: Caroline and her husband, Mark Shaffrey of Charlottesville, VA and their children, Curran, Tori, Anne and Aidan; brother: Bruce of Bluefield, WV.

Eleanor was a lifelong resident of Bluefield and was a devoted wife and mother. Widowed at a young age, she was left with slim resources to raise four children. Eleanor was a talented seamstress, often using newspaper as a pattern to make clothes her daughters saw in magazines. She was also a wonderful cook and gardener. She loved the simple pleasures in life, a Sunday drive, a piece of cake or pie and a new pocketbook. Mom, we wish you a safe journey and an eternity of happiness in heaven. We carry you in our hearts until we meet again.

There will be no public visitation. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Maple Hill Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 P.M. on Wednesday.
