Douglas Arnold
Mitchem
Sep 26, 1948 — Mar 23, 2026
Bluefield
After a brief illness, our family regrets to announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, Douglas Arnold Mitchem. Arnold passed away on Monday, March 23rd at home surrounded by his family.
In accordance with his wishes, the family will not be holding a viewing. However, there will be funeral services held in the mausoleum at Grandview Cemetery on Thursday, March 26th at 11:00 AM.
Arnold was born in Bluefield, WV on September 26, 1948. He graduated from Graham High School and has continued to be a Graham GMEN fan all his life. It was common to see him at many football and basketball games cheering the teams on. Arnold worked for PEMCO Corporation as an electrician for 39 years. After his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, taking hunting trips, going to the lake, cutting wood, and working in his garden at home. He was an avid outdoorsman and a wonderful family man.
Arnold is survived by his wife, Sandra Mitchem, son and daughter in law, Douglas and Andrea Mitchem, two granddaughters, Kyndal and Addison Mitchem, and niece Carol Scott.
Arnold and Sandra were married on July 17, 1970. They enjoyed almost 56 years together and enjoyed going to the lake, taking trips to the beach, and doing a lot of front porch sitting together at their home.
Arnold also enjoyed a special bond with his son, Douglas, as they enjoyed much of the same things. They were always doing something together, from attending football games at Graham and in Pittsburgh to watch the Steelers, to taking hunting trips, to spending weekends at the lake.
Arnold was also a proud grandpa to his two granddaughters, Kyndal and Addison. He loved nothing more than watching them grow up. He was always there to cheer them on in anything they did and loved every minute of it.
Arnold is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ellen Merritt, and father, Joe Merritt, both of Bluefield, VA.
Arnold leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his name to Legacy Hospice of Richlands, Virginia in
