CECIL EDWARD SPURGEON
Cecil Edward Spurgeon, 92 of Bluefield, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 05, 2020. Born in Bluefield, VA, he was the son of the late Cecil and Lillian Kitts Spurgeon. He was a lifelong member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was retired from the Town of Bluefield Virginia, working as Superintendent Salesman of Maple Hill Cemetery. After retirement, he was a member of the Cemetery Commission and was the General Manager of the Gateway Regional Transit Authority in Bluefield, WV. Cecil was a World War II Veteran in the United States Army, serving in France and Germany from 1945-1947. He was a company clerk of the 341 Quartermaster Depot Company, which was part of General Patton's 3 rd army in Mannheim, Germany. He was asked by the City of Bluefield, WV to rebuild the Ridgerunner Railroad Train; work began September 1983 and was completed about 7 months later. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years: Anna Buchanan Spurgeon, who was a great mother to her children and loved all her family; his son: James E. Spurgeon, who died November 11, 2014.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter: Linda Spurgeon Schweiss and husband, Robert of Louisville, KY; daughter-in-law: Vickie Brown Spurgeon of Bluefield, VA; grandchildren: Jess Spurgeon and wife, Kerri and their children, Sidney Spurgeon and Brody Dawson of Bluefield, VA, Lee Ann Spurgeon Woodson and husband, Rob and their children, Annalee, Cody, Jessee and Caitlin Woodson of Winchester, VA, Dr. Robby Schweiss and wife, Allison and their children, Graham and Hadley Schweiss of Oregon and Michael Schweiss and wife, Jenni and their daughter, Anna Schweiss of Indiana; sisters-in-law: Betty Buchanan Pou of Neeses, SC and Rita Buchanan of Bristol, VA; niece: Lisa Buchanan Sizemore of Richmond, VA and her children; nephew: Pastor Steve Buchanan and wife, Julie and their children of Bristol, VA; dear friends who helped him so much in his later years: Joyce Seyler, Nancy Brooks, Karen Baker, Jerry Henegar and neighbors in Pine Hill Park.
A service to celebrate Cecil's life will be held Thursday, September 10, 2020 at Dudley Memorial Chapel at 6:00 P.M. with Pastor Bill Lykins, Pastor Bill Davis and Pastor Steve Buchanan officiating. The Mercer County Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites Friday, September 11, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Maple Hill Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Maple Hill Cemetery by 10:45 A.M.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until the hour of the service.
